A headline management fee may not represent the full cost of an investment. Understanding costs means finding who pays, when the charge occurs and the amount on which it is calculated.
Separate transaction and ongoing charges
Purchase, sale and transfer charges arise from particular actions. Management, administration and custody expenses may recur. Costs deducted inside a fund can affect the reported value even when no separate invoice arrives. Read product and account charges together.
Read performance-fee conditions carefully
Where performance-related fees apply, identify the measurement period, calculation base and payment timing. Ask whether a hurdle or prior-loss recovery provision exists and how it works in that agreement. Do not assume that a familiar term has the same definition in every product.
Make comparisons on a common basis
Compare the same holding period, investment amount and share class. A low stated fee does not establish suitability, and a high fee does not prove superior results. Any illustration should show its assumptions and distinguish hypothetical outcomes from actual performance.
