Gold & precious assets

From the quoted price to the physical asset behind it.

Gold is one of EXAM INVESTMENT’s five specialist fields. Our perspective starts with the asset itself: what it is, where it comes from, how it is held and the conditions under which it can be sold.

Define the form of exposure

A physical bar, a claim on pooled metal, a listed instrument and shares in a mining business are not the same asset. The rights, costs and counterparty exposure differ. A discussion about gold should first establish which form is being considered rather than assume all forms move or behave alike.

Quality and provenance

For physical metal, weight, fineness, refiner identification and supporting records are starting points for review. Chain-of-custody information and the reliability of the parties involved matter alongside physical characteristics. A document should be matched to the actual asset and transaction.

LBMA’s Good Delivery framework is one reference for standards in the wholesale bullion market. It is not a statement that EXAM INVESTMENT or a particular transaction has LBMA accreditation, nor is it a guarantee of price or returns.

Custody, delivery and sale

Questions include whether ownership is allocated to identifiable metal, who holds it, what access and withdrawal rights exist, and how storage and insurance are charged. Exit conditions should clarify expected dealing costs and the process for a sale or physical delivery. A reference market price may differ from the amount actually received.

Risks to consider

Gold prices can fall. Currency movements, transaction spreads, storage costs, theft, fraud and counterparty failures may affect an outcome. Physical gold itself does not pay interest or dividends; a structure that promises income requires a separate explanation of its income source and additional risks.
