Tokenisation & real-world rights

A digital record needs a clear connection to the claim behind it.

Tokenisation can represent an asset or claim on a programmable platform. The technology is only one part of the arrangement. The rights, the parties responsible and the link to any external asset still need to be understood.

Identify the claim

A token might represent a contractual claim, a fund interest or another defined right. Ask who owes the obligation and which documents establish it. Owning a token does not, by itself, explain legal title to property held elsewhere.

Connect the digital and external records

If an external asset is involved, determine who safeguards it and reconciles the records. Ask who can amend, pause or replace the token system. Data feeds, bridges and service providers introduce dependencies that should be considered alongside the ledger itself.

Check transfer and redemption conditions

Technical transferability does not guarantee an available buyer or immediate redemption. Eligibility rules, dealing windows and the underlying asset’s liquidity may limit exit. BIS research highlights legal, technical and economic challenges alongside potential efficiencies.
